Attendance Policies

Welcome to Student Information Systems. Successful schools begin by engaging students and making sure they come to school regularly.  Therefore, Tuba City Unified Schools we take attendance seriously, and ask you as parents and students to do so as well.  Let your children know how important education is.  Answers to some common questions can be found below.

 

Instructional Absence Calculations

Absences are required by the state of Arizona for funding.  For elementary schools, attendance is based on half day, and by taking attendance twice, it lets the attendance office monitor that a student has not left the school during the day, and needs to be marked as partial day absences. Furthermore, if the teacher is not taking attendance in the morning and afternoon, then how are they tracking what students are missing that day, or have left the school permanently for that matter? And finally, by the Arizona State Legislation, and by the Arizona Department of Education, it is required of their employment:

If my child is absent, what should I do?

You may call the attendance office to report your child’s absence by 10 am and have your child bring a note the following day.

What do I need to put on an excuse note for my student?

An excuse note should contain: Students first AND last name, date(s) of absence, reason for absence, and parent/guardian signature.

What is considered an absence?

An absence is any instructional class time that is missed. Excused absences include but not limited to: sickness doctor/dental appointments funerals court Unexcused absences include but not limited to: sleeping late faulty alarm car trouble skipping School related activities are not considered absences. Examples of School related activities include but not limited to: Field trips school testing programs organizational contests/activities.

When is it appropriate for my child to not attend school?

If your child is ill, we recommend that you keep your child at home for your child’s benefit, as well as their class members and teachers.

How many absences can my student have?

Please refer to school handbook.

What can I do to help as a parent?

Make sure that your child attends school daily and arrives and departs at the scheduled times. Please do not keep your child from school unnecessarily for birthdays, haircuts, missing the bus, waking up late or for vacations. Please work hard to schedule appointments and vacations around the school calendar.
