When School Feels Hard: Understanding Anxiety and Avoidance in Kids

Tears at drop-off. A stomach ache that shows up right before the bus comes. A fight at the door that neither of you saw coming. If back to school has looked like this in your house, you are not alone, and you are not doing anything wrong.

That was the reassurance Dr. Chinwé Williams opened with when she joined Cartwheel's family webinar series to talk about school anxiety and avoidance. Dr. Williams is a therapist, private practice owner, and university professor who has spent her career working with anxious kids, teens, and the families who love them. She came with a simple framework for understanding what is happening underneath school avoidance, and seven practical strategies families can start using right away.

 

What anxiety is actually trying to do

Dr. Williams started with a basic definition: anxiety is a feeling of worry or nervousness that is built into all of us to alert us to a threat, real or perceived. It is not a character flaw, and it is not your child being dramatic or defiant, even when it can look that way in the moment. Anxiety is protective. The problem is when it goes into overdrive and hijacks the thinking brain, showing up in the body before logic ever gets a chance to help.

That is why an alarm system built to sense danger cannot always tell the difference between a real threat and a hard math test. The body reacts the same way, flooding with chemicals that make logic alone ineffective in the moment.

 

The anxiety-avoidance cycle

Dr. Williams walked families through a cycle that explains why avoidance is so hard to break. A trigger sets off anxiety. Avoidance follows because escaping feels better than staying. And here is the tricky part: avoidance works. It brings real, immediate relief, so the brain quietly learns that avoidance equals safety. The fear gets reinforced rather than resolved, and the next time that trigger shows up, it feels even bigger.

Avoidance itself is a symptom, not the full story. It can show up physically as stomach aches, headaches, or trouble sleeping, behaviorally as morning meltdowns or flat-out refusal, and emotionally as irritability or excessive reassurance-seeking. Common root triggers include social anxiety, academic perfectionism, sensory overwhelm, bullying, and under-diagnosed learning differences.

A question Dr. Williams hears often: how do you tell normal Monday grumbles from something that needs more attention? Occasional reluctance that eases once the day starts is typical. A pattern nearly every day for two or more weeks, escalating physical symptoms, or significant family conflict is a sign to bring in additional support.

 

Three common parenting traps

With real compassion, Dr. Williams named three instincts that tend to backfire, even when they come from love:

• The accommodation trap, allowing a child to avoid what scares them, which quietly teaches that avoidance is the only path to safety.
• Over-reasoning, explaining logically why there is nothing to fear, which does not land because a nervous system in fight-or-flight cannot process logic yet.
• The pressure trap, using shame, bribery, or harsh consequences, which tends to raise anxiety rather than resolve it.

Her reframe: the goal is not to eliminate a child's anxiety. It is to build their capacity to move through it with a steady, regulated adult alongside them.

 

Seven strategies that actually help

Dr. Williams grounded much of her guidance in the window of tolerance, the range in which a child can experience stress without being thrown into overwhelm on one end or shutting down into numbness on the other. Outside that window, a child cannot think, listen, or problem-solve, because their brain is essentially offline. From there, she offered seven practical approaches:

1. Co-regulate before you problem-solve. Calm yourself first, then validate what your child is feeling rather than trying to talk them out of it. "I see you, I hear you, this is really big for you" does more than "that's not scary" ever will.
2. Name it to tame it. Naming an emotion measurably reduces its intensity in the brain. Helping a child notice what their body is feeling, even before they have the words, is often the first step.
3. Build confidence through gradual exposure. Small, doable steps, like talking through what the morning will look like, do more than one giant leap.
4. Create predictable routines. Anxiety feeds on uncertainty, so consistent wake times, visual checklists, and preparing the night before all reduce decision fatigue and morning friction.
5. Practice regulation before you need it. Breathing techniques, the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding exercise, and progressive muscle relaxation only work in a crisis if they have already been practiced on a calm day, like a fire drill.
6. Hold empathy and expectations together. Validating a feeling and holding a boundary are not in conflict. "I know this is hard, and we are going to school today" can be said in the same breath.
7. Take care of your own regulation. Kids co-regulate off the adults around them, picking up on stress before a single word is spoken. Dr. Williams shared a personal story about her son's locker on his first day of middle school, and how catching her own rising anxiety, rather than projecting it onto him, gave him room to work through it himself.

 

When to seek additional support

Dr. Williams was clear that some signs call for extra help: symptoms lasting more than two weeks, escalating physical complaints, a growing number of missed school days, or any signs of despair or self-harm. Therapy works, and approaches like CBT and exposure-based treatment are well supported for school-related anxiety. She also encouraged families to loop in school counselors, who often have more tools available, from sensory rooms to small groups, than families realize.

Dr. Williams closed with a reminder worth holding onto: progress is rarely a straight line, and a child who has been doing well and suddenly struggles again is not going backward. With patience, the right tools, and community, things do get better. It echoed a reminder Dr. Juliana Chen, Cartwheel’s Chief Medical Officer, shared with families during the evening: never worry alone.
