Dear TCUSD Families,

We would like to share an important notice from the Department of Diné Education regarding the penumbral lunar eclipse occurring this evening, Thursday, August 27, through the early morning hours of Friday, August 28, 2026.

Weather permitting, the eclipse is expected to be visible in our region beginning at approximately 7:40 p.m. (DST) and ending around 1:00 a.m. (DST).

Within Diné culture, an eclipse is considered a sacred occurrence and a time to respect the natural order, the Holy People, and the cycle of life. The Department of Diné Education has shared cultural teachings and guidance regarding appropriate practices during the eclipse, including remaining indoors, refraining from certain activities, and using this time for reverence, reflection, and prayer.

Please see the attached notice from the Department of Diné Education for the complete cultural guidance and teachings surrounding tonight's eclipse. We encourage families to review and discuss this information together.

TCUSD is honored to respect and support the cultural teachings, traditions, and values of the communities we serve. This is also an important opportunity for our children to learn from the teachings that have been passed from generation to generation.
