Hello Faculty, Staff, Students and Community:

I am extremely happy to be member of the Tuba City Unified School District family and I am proud to represent you all as your superintendent for this upcoming school year!  Last Spring we were all heavily impacted by the Coroavirus-19 pandemic.  Never in our recent history have we had to close our schools down to students and teachers due to a deadly virus.  The Coronavirus-19 pandemic tragically impacted community that included Daughters, Sons, Mom’s, Dad’s, Grandpas and Grandmas in traumatic ways: either extreme illness or death.  Grief, sadness, anxiety and fear our feelings that we have all been experiencing and dealing with.  This 2020-2021 school year will be a time to heal and recover.  TCUSD is here to support you in any way that we can.  We have healthcare benefits that provide counseling services, biometric screening, preventative health services and health care.  Please contact Human Resources with any questions of services that we can provide for you.

Due to the tremendous impact of the Coronavirus-19 pandemic, our brick and mortar schools will not be opening to students and parents on our first day of school.  The district will provide teachers to begin beyond contract work August 3, 2020 – August 11, 2020.  All other classified and nine month staff will be provided beyond contract work August 5, 2020 – August 11, 2020.  The newly adopted calendar for the school year will begin August 12, 2020 to prepare for distant learning for our students who will begin school on August 17, 2020.

The pandemic has shifted our district focus in many ways.

  • Established health and safety protocols for staff to re-enter the facilities;
  • Provide masks and disinfectant for all individuals entering the facilities;
  • Established a 1-1 IPad initiative for students;
  • Purchased new Learning Management System: Schoology for lesson delivery;

Welcome back! With all of the new ways of providing instruction to our students, TCUSD will focus on providing thorough training opportunities for IPad usage for instructional purposes to students, parents and teachers.  In time, we will all get used to this new way of delivering instruction and receiving instruction.  I will focus on stabilizing our learning platform to ensure your success.  As the superintendent, I am here to ensure that all students have access to a high quality, enriching education.  In order to accomplish this, I offer my support, experience and expertise to the students, families, principals, teachers, and support staff.

Be Kind, Be Safe, Be Healthy!

Thank you,
Dr. Risha VanderWey
